A post-holiday detox is a great way to cleanse the body, rejuvenating and re-energizing for improved fat burning, weight loss, and overall health. Before diving into a detox program, it is important to recognize there are many types of detox programs. When executed correctly, a detox diet can be effective in removing harmful toxins and improving weight loss. However, carried out incorrectly, a detox diet can cause adverse health effects and even be dangerous.
Difference Between Detox and Fasting
The first step to choosing an effective detox program is to understand the difference between detoxing and fasting. Detox, according to WebMD, is a way of eating and drinking with the intent of pushing chemicals, toxins and impurities from the body; typically through a combination of natural foods and juices.
Fasting, on the other hand, means you are consuming nothing but water for an extended period of time. Fasting is obviously more extreme, often causing headaches, nausea and muscle weakness.
While the goal of both fasting and detoxing are to remove impurities from the system, detoxing is a gentler process that can be carried out while still maintaining your normal day to day routine.
Benefits of Detoxing
Used for centuries in Ayurvedic and eastern medicine, detoxing is a way to remove chemicals and toxins from pesticides, air pollution, and processed foods. Detoxing is especially recommended after the holidays or after the winter season as both are periods of increased eating and likely decreased exercise. The goal is to return the body from an acidic to alkaline state, increasing metabolism, fat burning, and weight loss during the process.
How Detoxing Works
Body fat stores a large amount of toxins and chemical. As the body burns fat for energy, these impurities are released into the system, exposing the body to their harmful effects. Detox uses organic fruits, vegetables and juices to fuel the body; at the same time flushing these toxins before they do harm.
While detox diets should only be followed for short periods of time, following the detox with an improved diet, consistent exercise plan, and tons of fresh, purified water will keep the body healthy and functioning at a high level.
