Researchers believe that diabetes and pre-diabetic conditions, including increased levels of blood sugar, cause damage to the cardiovascular system. Specifically, this damage appears to affect the flow of blood to the brain; mainly resulting from blockage of specific blood vessels.
Specialists also are finding that diabetes and pre-diabetic conditions appear to affect the cognitive ability and memory of those afflicted with the condition. These cognitive impairments associated with diabetic conditions appear to occur at a rate much faster than normal aging; these impairments are correlated with the increased development of dementia, including Alzheimer’s.
Managing Blood Sugar Levels
Fortunately, there are several important lifestyle changes to manage blood sugar levels and prevent diabetes. According to the Mayo Clinic, the most important steps are;
Exercising 5 days a week for at least 30-minutes;

According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disease, losing as little as 5 to 7% of body weight and exercising for 30 minutes a day reduced the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by more than 50%.
