Fresh fruit provides many wonderful health benefits, but it is important to know the health benefits provided by each fruit. New findings released by the Harvard School of Public Health indicate that certain whole fresh fruits, specifically green apples, blueberries, and grapes, decrease the risk of type 2 diabetes. The same report indicates that the juice of these fruits may actually increase the risk of diabetes.
While unable to make a direct link between fruit and the risk of diabetes, the study provides evidence that certain fruits, like apples and blueberries, may decrease diabetes risk.
Blueberries, Apples, and Grapes Lower Diabetes Risk by 23%
Specifically, researchers studied the consumption of fruit over a 24 year period. These findings indicate that people who ate blueberries, grapes and apples in their whole fruit form and at least two times a week, were 23% less likely to develop type 2 diabetes when compared to people who ate these fruits one time a month.
The same study indicates that drinking at least one serving of fruit juice per day increased the risk of type 2 diabetes by over 20%.
Dr. Christopher Adams, an endocrinologist at the University of Iowa credits the waxy and fibrous skins of apples, blueberries and grapes with protecting the body from glucose intolerance resulting from the diet.
While glycemic index of each fruit did not appear to influence diabetes risk, various levels of fiber, phytochemicals, and antioxidants may influence a fruits effectiveness in diabetes prevention.
