Scientists from Washington University have found definitive evidence that specific bacteria found in the gut contribute to making you fat, improving your immune system, and preventing digestive issues like irritable bowel syndrome.
Believe it or not, your body is host to over 10,000 species of microorganisms; primarily bacteria. In fact, most people carry between 3 and 5 pounds of bacteria in and on their body; trillions of bacteria live in our digestive tracts alone! While some of these bacteria are harmful, causing harmful infections and other illnesses, most of the good bacteria, or probiotics, are beneficial to the body in some way. These new strands of bacteria demonstrate the ability to affect body weight by either encouraging storing food as fat or quickly metabolizing it and passing it from the body. Another bacteria strand found in the digestive system can lessen the severity of several digestive ailments, including irritable bowel syndrome, leaky gut syndrome, and Chrohn’s disease.
