The type of bacteria in your gut may determine if you become overweight or even obese. New findings released in Science Translational Medicine offer support of the importance of probiotics for gut health and the importance of probiotics for weight control.
Specifically, this study reports that people who gained the most amount of weight seemed to lack a specific bacteria in their gut and digestive tract.
“It is now well known that bacteria in our gut play an important role in our health and well-being, possibly as important as our own immune response and proper nutrition,” said Jeffrey Cirillo, a researcher at the department of microbiology and immunology at Texas A&M University. “This means that disruption of the bacteria in our gut by use of antibiotics or eating foods that help only particular bacteria grow can have effects upon our entire bodies.”
While researcher are not sure of the exact connection between probiotics, bacteria and weight gain, they believe there is a strong correlation between the bacteria’s ability to metabolize food and the overall metabolism of the person in which they live.
Using these findings, researchers are now hopeful that a simple test can be developed to detect low-levels of bacteria in the gut; this test will indicate a person’s risk for obesity and obesity-related diseases, including diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and heart disease.
Until such a test is developed, doctors continue to recommend regular supplementation with probiotics and probiotic supplements to decrease the risk of weight gain and obesity.
